ALLIANT ENERGY’S ROCK COUNTY LNG FACILITY MOVES FORWARD

The Rock County liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage facility is moving forward, Alliant Energy announced today following verbal approval from the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin.

“We’re grateful for the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin’s thorough review, “according to Becky Valcq, President of Alliant Energy’s Wisconsin energy company. “This investment represents an important step in strengthening our energy infrastructure to meet customers’ needs, particularly during periods of high demand and extreme weather. It supports a more resilient energy system, helps manage costs and ensures we can continue providing the reliable service customers count on. We appreciate the engagement and feedback received throughout the review process and look forward to continuing to work closely with local communities as the project moves forward.”

During Winter Storm Fern in January 2026, interstate pipeline restrictions limited natural gas deliveries across the region, constraining critical energy infrastructure. The LNG storage facility in Rock County will strengthen system flexibility in situations like these by providing added assurance for residential, commercial and industrial customers, helping keep homes warm during extreme weather and enabling businesses to continue operating. It will also help manage costs during periods of market volatility.

The LNG storage facility will be located near the company’s Riverside Energy Center campus in Rock County, Wisconsin. About two-thirds of Wisconsin households rely on natural gas for heating, and demand rises sharply during extreme cold. LNG storage helps ensure a consistent, reliable natural gas supply during these periods. It also allows natural gas to be purchased and stored when prices are lower, helping reduce exposure to sudden price increases.
